The bulk of this collection consists of scrapbooks. The twenty scrapbooks are filled with newspaper clippings, magazine articles, and pictures covering such diverse topics as World War II, the Middle East, Lansing and East Lansing, Japanese culture and flower gardening. Also included are Ethel Rathke's prose and poetry and her correspondence with publishing companies, friends, and acquaintances.

The material in the Barnes collection encompasses the period 1846 to 1899. Barnes graduated from the University of Michigan in 1850 and settled in Lansing to practice law. After establishing his reputation, he became attorney for the Jackson, Lansing, and Saginaw Railroad. A manuscript copy of Stebbins' book A History of Plymouth Church (of Lansing) written in 1893 is included. Stebbins compiled an autobiography entitled Sketches of My Life, which he was completing at his death in 1901.
